Did You Know? US Army Soldiers protected our National Parks until 1914. In 1903 Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th Cavalry, led by Captain Charles Young, were garrisoned at the Presidio of San Francisco. Among other duties, they were stewards of Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. They rested in Los Banos on day 7 of their 16 day journey by horseback from the Presidio to Sequoia.
Folks,
on December 8th 2011 the Los Banos Buffalo Soldiers Association had their first ever Christmas Party at Ryan’s Place in Los Banos. Members came with their families and we had a great time!
Our membership has grown to 22 strong, (not all have uniforms) and we continue to grow thanks to the positive message we are spreading. not all the members were able to attend but were with us in spirit. We have youth events coming up including camping trips to Yosemite and the Presidio as well as other youth leadership events during Black History Month and throughout the year were we will be spreading the history of the Buffalo Soldiers.
It is the Vision of the LBBSA to:
promote education, respect, character and pride in today’s youth by exemplifying the Buffalo Soldiers, encouraging the participation of all nationalities. To foster national awareness of Buffalo Soldier history by promoting a social studies program designed to enrich students’ understanding and appreciation of the history and legacy of the African American soldiers who served in segregated army units at the turn of the last century. To provide a site where historical artifacts associated with the Buffalo Soldiers and other cultural groups can be displayed and where activities designed to educate the public of the history and traditions of the diverse and rich cultures that contributed to the development of our nation can be preserved.
May God bless you all and keep you safe this Holiday season.
